2020 Emerging Artist Incubator Series

2020 Emerging Artist Incubator Series

2020 Emerging Artist Incubator: A Professional Development Series.

Emerge is stoked to be partnering with  The National Endowment for the Arts, and the Idaho Commission on the Arts to bring you the 2019 Emerging Artist Incubator: A Professional Development Series.

“As a student in the Artist Incubator workshop, I appreciated the preparation and care the instructor put into both the class presentations and the written materials that were generously shared. (The Instructor) taught us how to build a body of work; how to write resumes, biographies, and artist statements; how to develop and display a portfolio; and how to apply for exhibitions and grants. (Their) enthusiasm and love for the arts was as clear as their desire to develop aspiring artists. I learned a ton in this workshop and recommend it without hesitation!” – Jo Lien, local photographer and 2018 Emerging Artist Incubator Participant

Emerge’s 2020 Artist Incubator features three types of course experiences:

● Incubator Core
● Open Critique and Portfolio Review
● Panel Discussion and Workshop

Incubator Core

The Incubator Core classes introduce a variety of topics related to fostering creativity and
professional engagement with the arts. The curriculum focuses on the creation of professional quality artworks, written documents, and portfolio rather than on sales strategies. These workshops highlight the importance of good creative habits and a disciplined approach to a career in the arts.
Artists transitioning from art school or private home studio practice into the professional realm will benefit greatly, and mid-career artists may find this series helpful in revising foundational documents and portfolio elements. This workshop series celebrates individuality rather than a onesize – fits – all approach to professional development. While each workshop explores current art industry standards, discussions focus on adapting these guidelines to fit the individual artist.

Each class session features two hours of presentation and discussion related to the topic of the day.

Printed course materials will accompany this part of each workshop. A private Facebook group is active for the entire five session workshop series, and is open only to Incubator Core students. This instructor-moderated forum provides space for further discussion about workshop topics and feedback on individual artists’ work. This approach allows for participants to engage in expanded discussions about workshop topics and to share their integration of new ideas and processes.

● Classes run once per month (two classes in February), with online discussion group for support between meetings.
● The Incubator Core classes will take place in the Emerge gallery space.
● Students must have an active Facebook account to participate in the online discussion forum.
● Enrollment is required for the entire 5 session series, $75 due at time of registration. Scholarships are available. Email programming@emergecda.com for scholarship information.
● This series is designed to serve artists who are 16 and older.
● This class is limited to 15 students.

Second Saturday, 10am – 12pm at Emerge

Class Topics

February 8th, 2020 – Purposeful Studio Practice: Creating a Cohesive Body of Work
This workshop will offer some guidance for artists who are ready to take their studio work to the next level. Each artist has their own studio habits and preferences, so we’ll explore ways each individual can promote artistic growth and work around common creative obstacles. Discussion topics will include: working in series, conceptual development, effective uses of sketchbooks and writing, studio time management, and more!

February 15th, 2020 – Writing an Artist Statement and Biography
An artist statement and biography are essential components of any artist’s toolbox. The
artist statement is a verbal introduction to the artwork, and similarly, the biography is an
introduction to the artist’s professional identity. Since these documents are used frequently
and in many different contexts, it is important to keep them current and looking their best.
In this workshop we’ll discuss some guidelines for getting started on or refining both of
these professional documents.

March 14th, 2020 – Writing an Artist’s Resume
Adhering to industry standards and creating consistent formatting are the keys to creating
an effective artist’s resume. This workshop offers an introduction to those standards, and
we’ll also discuss work flow methods and the use of one’s resume as a self-motivation tool. If you’ve been putting off resume creation or revision, this workshop will be a catalyst for the next stage of growth!

April 11th, 2020 – Making a Digital Portfolio
During this workshop, we’ll consider how to present an artist’s portfolio in an efficient and
professional manner. This session will address the creation of a cohesive and high quality selection of your personal artwork, as well as, the presentation of those photos in a portfolio. Digital technologies offer an array of options for presenting one’s artistic work to the world, and this workshop is an opportunity to discover the portfolio building method that fits you best and any artist open call.

May 9th, 2020 – Preparing for Presentation and Applying for Opportunities
You’ve put in the studio hours and the artwork is amazing. Your professional documents and portfolio are polished and proof-read to perfection. It is time to show your work to the
world! Proper presentation of the artwork is essential; professional framing, labeling, and
packaging protect the artwork and help the artist to make a good impression. This workshop will also introduce the practice of applying for a variety of opportunities at the local, regional, and national level.
