“All over the world, early humans created figurative sculpture, mostly in clay, as well as bone, rock and other materials. A large amount of figures are female, varying in size and shape and degree of detail. Loosely referred to as “Venus figures,” they must have held some importance to their makers and to their users.
This class will explore some of these early figures across a variety of cultures as a way of developing your own figurative sculpture. Techniques include solid modeling in clay, hollowing the figure, and a simulated pit-firing to give them an aged, rustic look.
The artist will share her work, including the YouShabti series (inspired by Egyptian culture), which combines clay figures with handcrafted “heads.”
