After several years of studio practice and adjunct teaching, I earned an MFA in printmaking from the University of Cincinnati. In 1995, I moved to Spokane, Washington, to join the art faculty at Gonzaga University, where I directed the printmaking program until retiring as Professor Emeritus in 2020.

My artwork is primarily about locating larger meaning within fragments of the world around me, often inspired by both human and plant forms. I think in terms of geography, topography and terrain as the place where the drawn mark can map these forms in space. And in this landscape of the contained gesture it is quite purely about drawing.”

Erin Lang

”My name is Erin Lang and my art work has developed over time beginning as a personal practice to explore understand and communicate my inner world, a mind a body full of feelings hard for me to understand or put my finger on.

As long as i can remember i have felt like i am full to the top, full of intense emotions and feelings some that feel like they are secrets even from myself, some that seem to not even belong to me at all but still find a home in the deepest pits of my stomach and dark corners of my mind. I struggle to communicate these feelings in words to others that make logical sense so I began creating artwork that visually reflect these experiences. this became a need for me to created, to get images out on front of me to process my emotions. My goal is to communicate my existence as a human being, not necessarily to be heard or understood but to get it out of my body in a way i can look at and maybe understand myself a bit better. Recently i was diagnosed with epilepsy manifesting in overactive electrical surges in the front left portion of my brain sometimes spreading thought my brain rapidly, for me this comes with auras an overwhelming sense of deja vu and what i can only describe as leaving my body to a place that feels very familiar like being in a dream you had as a child. This is a very jarring but interesting experience, in my art i try to portray this place, an eerie, mystical, spooky place that exists deep inside me that I don’t understand, that i cant always access but i feel like this place holds deep secrets. I find and use a lot of symbolism from nature and animals to represent the contrast and diversity of my emotions, the view of a bird that watches me ever day on my way to work the pigmy nut hatch partners that live in the tree outside my front door ,the tricky maniacal laughter and call of animals you hear as you fall asleep near the edge of the woods the prickly thorns of a thistle with its lovely purple flowers catching a bats delicate wings at the entrance of a cave, the way a pack of wolves stocks a herd of musk ox targeting the babies and the way the musk ox surround the baby in order to protect them, animals are not poisoned by ego as we sadly are as humans, they are who they are without ulterior motive, they survive and carry on. In striving for my deepest truest self i related to this characters when different emotions arise within me. I hope my art can be enjoyed for its odd quality or related to in any number of ways by people who experience a wide range of emotions and love to explore deeply into what it is to have a human experience”

Please RSVP if you plan on attending.

https://emergecda.com/products/ais-discussion-4-art-politics-and-social-issues-may-21st-5-30pm-7-30pm
