Digital Painting: A Beginner's Guide to Professional Illustration

Join Artist and Illustrator, Gabriel Lee Greene, in creating a gallery-ready illustration from start to finish! In this three week workshop students will focus on 3 phases of creating & printing their own professional-grade digital artwork.

The first Wednesday, March 20th, is dedicated towards cultivating ideas and inspirations, students will create a group moodboard for the class to reference, develop thumbnail sketches and color palettes, and hone in on a final design for their illustration.

During the second class session on March 27th, the class will focus on transforming one of their thumbnail sketches into a rough draft/underpainting by creating dynamic and lively compositions using art and design principles.

The final day of this workshop on April 3rd will consist of transforming students’ rough drafts into gallery quality, print ready artwork. This will include rendering tips and tricks from Gabriel’s own process, as well as helpful bits about exporting your artwork for web and print use. At the end of this class, students will submit their artwork for printing to receive a professional quality print of their illustration!

This is the perfect workshop for digital artists looking to take their first steps towards selling their artwork— whether in galleries, independently, or in online shops.

Students will need to bring their own graphic design tools. This includes a device to work on and an app/software to draw in. Whatever you'd like to learn with and/or work with already will work! Gabriel will be demonstrating these skills using an iPad and Procreate, however, everything taught in this workshop will be applicable to whatever hardware/software students are using.

Device recommendations include:

  • iPad or similar device and stylus
  • Computer/laptop and drawing tablet (Wacom, Huion, Xencelabs, XP Pen, etc.)
  • Dedicated drawing tablet
  • Even an iPhone will work!

Software recommendations are:

  • Procreate ($9.99, available on iPad/iPhone)
  • Adobe Fresco (Free. Available on Apple and Android devices)
  • Adobe Photoshop ($9.99 subscription. Available on iPad, Android, and most computers)
  • Other popular software like Krita, Clip Studio Paint, Autodesk Sketchbook, Affinity, etc. will work as well!

Students will receive a pack of digital art brushes, texture overlays, and a .psd file of Gabriel's canvas setup. This download will be sent to you automatically after purchasing your ticket for the class. If you run into any problems, please email programming@emergecda.com.
