I have been a maker of things for as long as I can remember. From the time I was six years old, I sewed my own clothing, repurposed jeans and jackets into quilts and pillows, and re-designed thrift store items. In the 80’s, I operated a home-based sewing business, offering custom outdoor clothing, gear and insulated window treatments. Pottery became a happy pastime in high school and college, as did baking, leather tooling and woodworking. During a few leather-crafting years, I could be seen wearing my handmade sheepskin leather moccasins in knee-deep snow, just to see if they would hold up.Collecting willows, aspen and cottonwood reeds along the Yellowstone River led me to a love of basket weaving. For several years, I created baskets and taught others to weave baskets from native and manufactured reeds. I’ve since turned my focus back to the sewing machine and potters wheel. It has been a joy to be part of the Emerge CDA and Gizmo pottery programs. Since this summer, I have been teaching the fundamentals of pottery to Gizmo’s beginning students. While I don’t create things in large quantities, I do enjoy making items that are pleasing to look at yet functional and fun to use.
